Do you play Scramble on Facebook? What about Shake & Spell on your iPhone or iPod Touch? If you're familiar with either game, you'll know the basic principle; a 4x4 or 5x5 grid of letters and a short period of time in which to find as many words as possible using the letters shown. It's a game that tests your memory, vocabulary and pattern recognition skills.

OK, it's an easy enough game to get the hang of, but unless you're the sort of person that can remember all 971 three letter words in the dictionary (we counted!) or the frankly amazing 3902 four letter words, you're not likely to become world champion. Even if you achieve respectable scores regularly, it's still galling to see someone shamelessly cheat their way through round after round.

So what is Unscrambled?

Unscrambled searches for all possible words in a Scramble or Shake & Spell grid. You just set the grid size, enter the letters you see on the screen, specify what maximum word length you wish to search for, and click the Cheat! button. In just a few you seconds, Unscrambled will show you all possible words, neatly sorted by length or in alphabetical order. Unscrambled will even highlight the path through the grid needed to enter each word.

To ensure you don't waste any time trying words that aren't recognised, Unscrambled can use both the TWL06 dictionary, as used in Scramble, or the TWL98 dictionary, as used by Shake & Spell. Unscrambled also comes with the SOWPODS dictionary which is used by some Scramble clones. To give you the most time in which to enter the words found within the game, the search and dictionary look-up routines have been optimised for speed; searching for words with a maximum of six letters takes less than ten seconds on most computers and searching for words with a maximum of eight characters takes less than fifteen seconds.
